Alexander Abreu is considered to be one of the best trumpeters of the new generation
of Cuban musicians and is in great demand among the island’s best musicians. In 2000,
he was voted best timba trumpeter by the website www.timba.com, ahead of big names
like Elpidio Chapotin, Carmelo Andres, Juan Mungia and Julio Padron. Born in Cienfuegos,
Alexander began studying music at the Ignacio Cervantes conservatory and in 1994 joined
the Havana National Arts School (ENA). He went on to teach trumpet at ENA and then taught
both jazz and Cuban music at the RMC conservatory in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.
Among others, Alexander has played with Irakere, the Cuban Symphony Orchestra, Omara
Portuondo, Paulo FG, Isaac Delgado, Carlos Manuel y Su Clan and Manolin El Medico De La
Salsa. Many of the records to which he has contributed have been awarded, or nominated
for, Grammys or Latin Grammys (among them La Rumba Soy Yo, 2001).
Alexander became the composer and arranger for Danish group Grupo Danson in 2001
and went on to set up Habana D’Primera, a group comprised entirely of musicians from the
most prominent of Cuban timba orchestras. Their fi rst album appeared in November 2008.
Several of its tracks, including Cuando el Rio Suena, are already big hits in both Europe
and Cuba. Havana D’Primera is a promising new 15-strong ensemble which is set to cause
a storm. The group will embark on its first European tour in July-August 2009.
